April 2017 Teen Board Meeting

Teens in grades 5-12 are invited to attend our next Teen Board meeting, Tuesday, April 18, 2017, from 4:00 - 4:45 p.m.

Make decisions about the Teen Section of the Library, plan programs, and volunteer your time to make the Library (and the world) a better place!
WE ARE LOOKING for some special teens to serve as Reading Buddies for children in grades K-4 this summer.  Teen Reading Buddies will come to the Library one day a week for one hour.

     June 6, 13, 20, 27

     July 11 & 18

We understand that you may have summer vacations and camps planned and we will excuse those absences.

Teen Board Meeting

Teen Board Members:

We meet tomorrow, Thursday Sept. 17, at 4:00 p.m. to 1) plan a Halloween Party for the Library 2) decide if we will walk in the Heritage of Flight Festival Parade 3) discuss the Teen Art program coming up later this month 4) train some teens to teach library patrons how to check out eBooks on their phones and tablets and 5) plan teen programs for October and November.

*Mini Flashlight Workshop for TEENS (grades 5-12)
PLEASE PRE-REGISTER; limited to 20 teens
This workshop introduces electricity, circuits and soldering. teams will learn components of the flashlight and prototype the circuit with little bits. Students will learn all the components of a soldering iron and how to solder safely, finally construct their own Lip Balm flashlight. This Tinkr Tech workshop puts students into small groups and will take about two hours. 
Please pre-register; for teens in grades 5-12.

*Teen Craft: Mask & Unmask
PLEASE PRE-REGISTER; limited to 20 teens
Show the world who you are (and create a great decoration for your room) by decorating a masquerade mask or porcelain face. Feathers, jewels, and paint provided.
Please pre-register; for teens in grades 5-12.

TEEN PRIZE AUCTION
Only for teens who participated in the TEEN Reading Program, UNMASKED, and who turned in TEEN reading cards by Friday, July 24, 2015.  If you participated in the Teen Reading Program, claim your (fake) credit card and use it to bid on real prizes!  Come in a costume or mask for extra money!

About The Book:

Harper is an aspiring poet, and life is giving her a lot to write about just now. Daddy up and walked out, leaving them with too many bills, too little money, and an eviction notice. Now Mama is scrambling to make ends meet, leaving Harper to stay home and take care of her brother. Their whole world has been turned upside down, which Harper could just about handle—if it wasn’t for the poetry contest at school. More than anything, she wants to get up on that stage and read her poems out loud. But how can she worry about getting back to school when she doesn’t even know where she’s going to sleep tonight?

My Review:

I didn't know what to expect when I picked up this book. It was a library copy, something my friend had read and I thought sounded interesting. Usually, I don't read books like this because I'd rather read science fiction or fantasy, but poetry is something I really love, which helped add to my interest.

I read this entire book in the car. I started on the first page and read all the way to the last page, nearly without stopping. It had me entranced, sad, and my emotions were like a whirlwind. You feel bad for Harper from the very start, from her father to the eviction notice to everything else.

I usually don't like sad books, but even with as sad as this book was, it is by far one of the best I've ever read. The story is mind swirling, amazing and emotional, all while being believable and easy to follow.

I would highly reccommend this book to anyone who can handle a bit more emotional book and is over the age of ten.
